February burst in with a flurry of activity as the country came to better grips with the COVID pandemic and people understood what to do to keep safe.  Still an unpleasant disease to be living with.
A reminder of the top-notch speakers we had in February starting off with a technology session for all members by Phill, Bill and Paul – other members pitched in who had better knowledge than we did; for example, Pat Drummond and the portable audio system.  On the following Tuesday we went on a field trip with Lis Bastion to the sustainable horticultural and community garden she has created in Blackheath – what an amazing achievement.  Then on one evening we enjoyed a social meeting at the Katoomba RSL where all could relax and laugh in a conducive atmosphere.  Maurice Cooper OAM came on the 23rd Feb, who owns and operates Bygone Beauty’s and he spoke to us about businesses surviving in a pandemic by using the governments financial aid plus treating his staff with respect and making them feel part of the solution to recovery.
Improving news on the project to help homeless people in the upper mountains.  Some of the other Rotary Clubs in the Upper Mountains are willing to assist in fund raising, searching for suitable sites and general coordination.  The second Trivia night to raise funds for our homeless project had 57 participants and the three teams from Lower Blue scoop the podium (again) – well done.  This brought us over the $15,000 dollar mark in our RAWCS fund which meant that the Dick Smith Community matching grant is now available.  Watch this space.

In a COVID world, with social isolating rules, we have had to modify our fundraising and rethink how we communicate with our community. Online meetings are now the norm. However, there is still plenty happening for Rotary in the Blue Mountains, Australia, and internationally. I specifically want to mention our "Helping the Homeless" Trivia Night fundraiser next month. Apart from being a lot of fun, it goes towards helping those in need in the Mountains. All the details below.
Secondly, we are very pleased to see "Supporting the Environment" being elevated to one of the key areas of focus worldwide. for Rotary International. I think for us this is pretty important, after the fires and living in a World Heritage area. Some of our past projects like the koala relocation reflect on this new focus.
So when this bulletin arrives in your inbox, please have a read and share it with your friends. Better still, give us a call and book your spot for the Trivia Night, and join us online at a meeting.
"Helping the Homeless" Trivia Night - 26 September

          "Helping the Homeless" Trivia Night

Please join us on Saturday 26th September from 7:00 - 9:00 pm for a fun and easy way to test your knowledge and help the homeless in the Blue Mountains. Get your Dream Team together, at $20per team member. Your team can be at your place (depending on current COVID rules) or remotely.  Pay online through Rotary at https://directory.rawcs.com.au/102-2019-20 and make sure you call it a “Donation.” Donations are tax deductible. Then, register your team with Paul at president.ubmsunrise@gmail.com.
We will be using ZOOM (everyone knows about that now) and Kahoot! (a fun app to download on your Smart Phone that really gets the trivia night buzzing). Press the links to learn more. Both ZOOM and Kahoot are free to use.

Please read these instructions on how to join and play trivia on the night.

Rotary InternationaI - Environment Focus

Its time for Rotary to focus on the wellbeing of the planet. This is an exciting moment in Rotary's history. The Rotary International Board and Rotary Foundation have unanimously approved adding a new area of focus: supporting the environment.
By creating a distinct area of focus to support the environment, this will give Rotary members even more ways to bring about positive change in the world.
Supporting the environment becomes Rotary's seventh area of focus, which are categories of service activities supported by global grants. It joins peacebuilding and conflict prevention; disease prevention and treatment; water, sanitation, and hygiene; maternal and child health; basic education and literacy; and community economic development.

Walk 4 Hope - Huntingtons - 2020

Since 2016 our Club has supported this annual event, organised by Huntingtons NSW, to raise funds for those suffering with Huntingtons Disease and their families. This has been their major fundraiser. However, with social isolating COVID restrictions in place, the annual walk in Parramatta will not take place, at least in a formal way.

We are very grateful to everyone who supports the vital work of Huntington’s NSW & ACT by holding external events or activities to help raise funds so that we can provide essential services for people with Huntington’s disease and their families. The need is greater than ever. Bill Pixton and Bob Montgomery are planning a gentle walk at Wentworth Falls Lake on Sunday 27th September at 11:00am. Registration this year is free, but we ask you to make a donation instead. You can do this directly on the Huntingtons NSW, or donate via the Everyday Hero site. Further details will be provided closer to the date.
Vale Eddie McCoy

It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of a wonderful friend and Rotarian Eddie McCoy.  Eddie and Carol had a great love of travelling. They had their caravan hitched up ready to head north for a few weeks when Eddie had a massive heart attack from which he never recovered. Eddie was a member of RC Blackheath for about 8 years and made a significant contribution to Rotary, RC Blackheath and the Blackheath community.  He was president in 2015-16, and was the principal organiser of the Club’s ANZAC Day Golf Day which raised significant funds mainly for Katoomba hospital. He was the manager of Libby Bleakley’s RAWCS project, building a PCYC Gymnasium with associated facilities in Dili Timor-Leste – a project which our club has supported for many years.   In recent years he was also Club Treasurer.  Outside Rotary he was President of the Blackheath Tennis club and a very supportive neighbour to all those living close-by.

Rotary International President- Jennifer Jones

A First for Rotary International

Jennifer Jones, a member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland, Ontario, Canada, has been nominated to become Rotary International’s president for 2022-23.
Her nomination as RI President is a first for Rotary and reflects current thinking on encouraging diversity, equity and inclusion of all demographic groups in growing Rotary’s membership.
A current Rotary Foundation trustee, Jones has been a Rotary member since 1997 and has served Rotary as RI vice president, director, training leader, committee chair, moderator, and district governor.
We look forward to her year as Rotary International President for 2022-23.

After complex negotiations (through a secret intermediary), we are delighted to announce the renowned raconteur will be pinning an article for us next month.

Yes ...its the enigmatic, erudite and elusive Mountain Ghost. When he has something to say....we listen.
